January - The renaissance of booze

WORDSMITH SOUNDCLASH

After a combined total of over 40 years bitching, slagging and moaning
about the dubious musical talents of thousands of fresh faced hopefuls, five
of the capital's most sourfaced scribes finally stand up and put their
money where their mouth is Stephen Armstrong, Ajax Scott, David Swindells
and Richard's Benson and Sutcliffe - with a wealth of sniping
experience on the likes of the Sunday Times, Time Out, Music Week, the Face, Vogue, The Observer, The Guardian and X-Ray - have an hour each to prove they really know what the good folks of London want to listen to.

Will the dancefloor fill with eager, hands aloft punters? Will they be
bottled off the decks by an incensed crowd of drunks? Or will people barely
notice and continue to jig aimlessly from foot to foot? It's like DJ
X-Factor but without any of the compelling human interest features.
Nonetheless, it will finally give music industry professionals the chance
to say to one of these word smiths - 'derivative and formulaic with an eye
on the main chance. One star.'

Club nights for March

March 6th - We're delighted to welcome the lovely Mark Moore to El Gordo. The former S Express front man has been at the cutting edge of dance culture since the mid 80's and the legendary Mud Club - and he's still ahead of the game now. Expect a mish mash of balearic beats, sleazy disco and electro!

March 13th - We'll be throwing a big birthday party for a very special surprise guest, alongside the legend that is our five-a-side a-z all singing, all dancing music quiz. Email all or call to participate.

March 20th - Two very special guests - the brilliant Barry K Sharpe and Lascelles - will be reviving the legend that was The Cat In The Hat. They were throwing the funkiest parties at The Wag between '84 and '86 before anyone had even heard of the phrase Rare Groove. A very, very rare DJ performance - make sure you don't miss it!

March 27th - One of the Godfathers of acid house, the none-more-balearic Nicky Holloway, joins us this week. Nicky was throwing some of the best parties and playing the best records even before his legendary trip to Amnesia with Rampling, Oakenfold and Walker, in the Summer of 1987. He'll be bringing the Ibiza glory days with him to El Gordo this Saturday.

April 10th - Blitz Club and Visage legend Rusty Egan joins us again this week. He enjoyed himself so much last time, he asked to come back and play for even longer. Expect three hours of the finest electronic music you're likely to hear.

Thank you to everyone who made new years eve so very special. We're still broken from it all.

The Guardian guide got it so right when they made the el gordo knees up their number 2 choice for 2003: "ex-saint, that mid-1990s bar that looked like a joke out of Wallpaper, resurrected in current Spanish taverna guise c/o the brilliant Ben and Andy Boilerhouse. Loving it and loving their wild balearic knees-up style". We couldnt have called it beter ourselves!

And so its time for our January pay-back. In addition to our champion mixologists and award winning cuisine, and our mercifully walet friendly bar prices its time to praise some of the greatest inspirations behind the El Gordo sound. The Originators.

This saturday and every saturday during January we pay homage to some of the pioneers to whom we gladly tip our musical hat. Nicky Holloway (3rd), Mike Pickering (10th), Ross Allen (17th), David Dorrell (24th) and Paulie Harris (31st) are the first five to be inducted in The Fat One's Hall of Fame.

So come join us in tribute, its a very friendly fiver before 11, in the spirit of the January times.

See you in the church to the musically gifted

Love, Ben and Andy .

El Gordo in the press... well, we don't like to boast...
